Research Reports
The Office of the Comptroller has launched a new initiative to produce economic research reports that utilize data available through this agency, as well as data from government and non-government entities. These reports are offered to provide policymakers, business leaders, and all Marylanders with more information about issues that intersect with or are directly impacted by our agency.

State of the Economy Series
In January 2024, the Office of the Comptroller released the inaugural State of the Economy (SOTE) Report that examined economic trends in Maryland compared to the U.S. and neighboring states. This report has been followed by a series of SOTE briefs that further examine key topics and findings from the original report to inform policymakers and the public.

State Spending Series
For Maryland to prosper and thrive in the 21st century, it needs to build more. The state needs more transit, climate resilience infrastructure, housing, schools, and industrial facilities. As Maryland’s elected Chief Fiscal Officer, the Comptroller of Maryland is supportive of cost-effective investments that grow the economy and advance opportunity for all Marylanders. This series explains state expenses and shares lessons learned from across the U.S and world about cost drivers of public goods projects that are essential to inclusive growth.
Other Policy Research
The Office of the Comptroller partners with subject matter experts to explore topics that are important to Maryland’s economy and the economic well-being of the state’s residents, businesses, and communities. These reports incorporate both research and action items for expanding opportunity and inclusive growth.
