Maryland Tax Toolkit
The IRS tax filing season will begin on January 27th. Tax season in Maryland will begin on the same day with a controlled rollout in accordance with IRS best practices. Full tax return processing is expected to begin on February 3rd.

Direct File- New!
Maryland is one of 24 states participating in the Internal Revenue Services' Direct File program (PDF), a new free online filing system that will make federal and state tax filings easier in 2025. An estimated 870,000 Marylanders will be able to use Direct File to file their federal tax returns first and then file their state tax return through a portal built by our partners at Code for America that will transfer key data from your federal to your state return. Free Tax Preparation Partners
The Office of the Comptroller partners with the CASH (Creating Assets, Savings and Hope) Campaign of Maryland, which provides free tax preparation services for individuals or households who earned $64,000 or less. Contact the CASH Campaign of Maryland by calling 410-234-8008, Monday to Friday, from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., schedule an appointment online for the Baltimore City or Baltimore County offices, or reach out to a CASH Campaign Tax Partner. The Office of the Comptroller also supports the work of our partners providing free income tax preparation to eligible Marylanders. Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) sites are trusted tax preparation programs located throughout the state where IRS-certified volunteers can help many* residents file their taxes for free!

Tax Credits
The Office of the Comptroller is responsible for the administration of the state tax code. Marylanders can apply for and claim dozens of personal and business tax credits that can reduce what may be owed to the state and/or increase a refund.

Maryland Tax Connect – For Businesses
Maryland Tax Connect is a self-service portal that allows Maryland businesses to file their taxes online more easily and securely and to interact with the Comptroller’s Office in various ways. The platform launched for business taxpayers in February 2024. In2026, all Maryland taxpayers will be able to pay their state taxes through the portal.
